Business Intelligence Tools Overview

What BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau and Looker do, how they fit with data warehouses, and how to choose.

Editorial team 2 min read

Business intelligence (BI) tools turn data into dashboards and reports that people across an organisation can use.

What BI Tools Do

  • Connect to data sources: databases, warehouses, spreadsheets, applications.
  • Model data: relationships between tables, calculated measures, business definitions.
  • Visualise: interactive charts, dashboards and reports.
  • Share and govern: publishing, permissions, scheduled refreshes.

Well-Known Tools

  • Power BI (Microsoft): tight integration with Excel and Microsoft 365.
  • Tableau: strong visual exploration.
  • Looker: a centrally defined modelling layer for consistent metrics.
  • Many others, including open-source options such as Apache Superset and Metabase.

Where BI Sits

Typically on top of a data warehouse that holds cleaned, modelled data. The BI layer should mostly visualise and slice data, not do heavy transformation.

Choosing a Tool

  • Fit with your existing platforms and skills.
  • Data sources and volumes.
  • Governance: shared metric definitions, row-level security.
  • Licensing costs as usage grows.
  • Self-service needs versus centrally built reports.

Success Factors

  • Define metrics once and reuse them.
  • Invest in data quality upstream.
  • Train users.
  • Retire unused reports.
  • Make ownership clear.

Increasingly, AI

Many BI tools add natural-language querying and AI-generated summaries. Treat these like any AI output: useful, but check the underlying numbers.
