Prompting for Explanations and Teaching

Getting clear explanations pitched at the right level, with analogies, examples and checks for understanding.

Language models can be patient, tireless tutors. Good prompts make their explanations fit the learner.

State the Learner's Level

"Explain gradient descent to someone who knows basic algebra but no calculus" produces something very different from "explain gradient descent".

Ask for Structure

  • Start with the big idea in one sentence.
  • Then a concrete example.
  • Then the details.
  • Then common misconceptions.

Use Analogies Carefully

Analogies aid understanding but break down at the edges. Ask the model to note where an analogy stops applying.

Worked Examples

Request step-by-step worked examples, then a similar problem to try yourself.

Check Understanding

Ask the model to quiz you, or explain the concept back in your own words and ask for feedback on what you got wrong.

Socratic Mode

"Don't give me the answer; ask me questions that lead me to it." Useful for deeper learning.

Verify for Accuracy

Explanations can contain subtle errors, especially in advanced or niche topics. Cross-check important points with textbooks or trusted sources.

Build Progressively

For a new field, ask for a learning path: concepts in order, with prerequisites, and resources for each.
