AWS Global Outage 2025
By glitchdata Team 2 min read
Today, AWS experienced a major global outage that impacted thousands of companies, millions of users and exposed the fragility of modern cloud-dependant infrastructure.
What happened
- Starting in the early hours (US East region) a subsystem failure within AWS’s internal network load-balancer/monitoring infrastructure triggered cascading failures.
- The root region of the issue was AWS’s US-EAST-1 region (Northern Virginia), a zone that hosts vast amounts of services.
- The malfunction involved inability to reliably resolve DNS endpoints for key services (specifically the DynamoDB API endpoint) which caused many downstream services to fail.
- Delta Air Lines and United Airlines were among the companies hit by service disruptions. Across the Atlantic, customers of major British banks—Lloyds, Bank of Scotland, and Halifax—reported being locked out of their online accounts. The U.K. government’s tax service, HMRC, and the main government portal, Gov.uk, were also affected.
- The outage impacted an extremely wide swath of the internet: gaming (Fortnite, Roblox), social media (Snapchat), smart-home devices (Ring / Alexa), finance (Venmo, Coinbase), and government/banking services in the UK among others.
- AWS announced that by the afternoon the main problems had been mitigated and services “returned to normal operations”. Some backlog processing remained.
