Vibe Coding

By glitchdata Team 2 min read

“Vibe Coding” is an AI-assisted software development technique where AI build software based on commands in natural language. This capability uses AI Agents powered by large language models (LLMs) to generate code.

It’s taken awhile for computers to auto-code beyond making suggestions, and syntax-checking. Ai Coding Agents now allow Business Analysts, and business owners to directly participate in software development. But before we fire our software developers, we should understand how Vibe Coding is impacting software development.

Stage 1: Vibe Coding

So you’ve played with ChatGPT and other AI chatbots. And you have started asking AI to solve software problems. The response has been positive. Alot of cut & paste is needed to extract the value from the AI chatbot into a software environment. Congrats! It’s slow, but non-developers can now start projecting software skills.

Stage 2: Intelligent IDEs

So having seen some success with AI chatbots, you’re looking to shorten the turn around from Request->AI Response -> Dev Environment. Cut and pasting is painful and the search for Intelligent IDE is on. Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is one of the early providers of AI powered IDEs. VS. Code allows you to enable extensions like:

  • Github Copilot
  • OpenAI Codex

Once installed, you can start Vibe Coding directly in the IDE. There are some issues, but the AI Agent is useful in generating basic projects. It can be slow, and AI might not always understand your requests.

Stage 3: Intelligent Development

So your team is now using AI Agents within an Intelligent IDE. You are looking to speed up the conversation with AI, and buying tokens and subscriptions is now on your mind. Your team is learning to make smarter requests with AI. You’ve successfully started your Vibe Coding journey. Maybe there are alternatives?

What’s next?

You now need to evaluate the multiple coding agents in the marketplace. You have to evaluate the integration within your software development strategy. You need to identify usecases, privacy and intellectual property requirements for the application of the AI Agents. You need metrics to understand the effectiveness of vibe coding. There is alot to do here. The journey has just begun.
