Every yellow taxi trip in New York City in January 2024: 2,964,624 trips with pick-up and drop-off times, zones, distances and fares.
About
Trip records submitted to the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission by yellow-cab technology providers. One month is a manageable size for a laptop and still large enough to be interesting.
19 columns, including tpep_pickup_datetime, tpep_dropoff_datetime, passenger_count, trip_distance, PULocationID / DOLocationID (TLC taxi zones), payment_type, fare_amount, tip_amount, total_amount, congestion_surcharge and Airport_fee.
Working with it
The file is Parquet, so open it with pandas (pd.read_parquet), DuckDB, Polars or Spark rather than a spreadsheet. The TLC publishes a data dictionary and a zone lookup table on the source page. Expect some dirty records, such as negative fares and zero-distance trips.
Source and licence
NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission, published through NYC Open Data under the City's terms of use. Other months and other vehicle types (green taxis, for-hire vehicles) are on the source page.
